Add Bagel to Discord

Connect a Discord server to your channel, let Bagel set it up, and know what to do when Discord says no.

01What you need

at a glanceA Premium channel, and a Discord server you own or manage.

You need three things. First, a Twitch account signed in to the Bagel dashboard. Second, a Premium channel: Discord is a beta module and is open to Premium channels only while the beta lasts. Third, a Discord account that owns the server, or has Manage Server on it. Bagel can only be added to a server where you have one of those.

Not Premium yet? The Discord page shows "Premium only while in beta" and a "See plans" button. What you set up during the beta keeps working after it ends.

02Add Bagel to your server

at a glanceSeven steps, about two minutes.
  1. Open the Discord page

In the dashboard menu, open "Discord".

  2. Start the connection

Choose "Add a server". If the button is greyed out, see the table at the end of this guide.

  3. Sign in to Discord if it asks

Discord opens. Use the Discord account that owns the server or has Manage Server on it. Bagel asks Discord for your server list once, to build the next page. The list is never stored.

  4. Find your server

On "Servers you manage", look for your server. Use "Find a server" to search by name. Server missing? You need the Manage Server permission on it.

  5. Choose "Add Bagel here"

Click "Add Bagel here" on that row. Discord opens its confirm screen.

  6. Keep every permission checked and authorize

Discord lists the permissions Bagel asks for. The dashboard tells you to keep them all checked. Then choose "Authorize", the button the dashboard names for Discord's confirm screen.

  7. Let Bagel set up the server

Bagel joins the server and sets it up. The dashboard opens that server's page. If the server already had channels, Bagel keeps them and tells you so.

No server yet? On the Discord page, "Create my Discord" builds one from Bagel's template. Each server keeps its own channels, roles and settings, and you can connect as many servers as you like.

03Main permissions Bagel asks for

at a glanceThe main ones, and why. Keep them all checked. Bagel never needs Administrator.
PermissionWhy Bagel asks
Kick Members, Ban Members, Timeout MembersModeration.
Manage Roles, Manage ChannelsTo set up your server: the channels and roles Bagel needs.
Change NicknameTo apply the premium name. Servers added before Bagel asked for it need "Re-authorize Bagel" (see the table below).
Plus message, voice and audit-log permissionsDiscord's confirm screen also lists permissions to view channels, send and manage messages, add reactions, embed links, attach files, read message history, connect to and move members in voice channels, use application commands and view the audit log. Bagel asks for 17 permissions in all. The rows above are the main ones.
Keep them all checked If you uncheck one on Discord's screen, Discord later refuses some actions. The fix is "Re-authorize" on the server's Settings page, with every permission checked. Bagel never needs Administrator.

04Reading the server list

at a glanceWhat each row means and which button to use.
What the row saysWhat you can do
"Bagel is not in this server yet."Choose "Add Bagel here".
"Bagel is already in this server."Choose "Open" to manage it. Choose "Add Bagel again" to run Discord's confirm screen once more, for example after you unchecked a permission.
"Bagel needs to be added again to work in this server.""Add Bagel again" is highlighted. Choose it and authorize on Discord.
"Linked to another channel"Another Twitch channel already uses this server. Ask that channel's owner to open the server in Bagel, go to Settings and choose "Disconnect". Then add it here again.
Leave other channels' servers alone Do not remove Bagel from a server that is linked to someone else's channel. It is part of their setup. Only that channel's owner can free the server, by choosing "Disconnect".

05Create the channels and roles

at a glanceOne button adds what is missing. Nothing is deleted.
  1. Open your server in the dashboard

On the Discord page, choose "Open" next to the server.

  2. Open its Settings page

In the "Server settings" menu, choose "Settings".

  3. Find "Server layout"

The "Server layout" card explains what the button does.

  4. Choose "Create missing channels and roles"

Bagel adds the channels and roles it needs that the server is missing, and uses any role you pinned on the Roles page. Nothing is deleted. A "Server set up." message confirms it.

If the server already had its own channels, Bagel keeps them and adds only what it needs. Pick the rest on the "Channels" page.

06Fix the role order

at a glanceDiscord only lets a bot manage roles below its own role.

A bot can only manage roles that sit below its own highest role. If Bagel cannot assign a role, its role is too low in the list. This is the fix.

  1. Open Server Settings in Discord

In Discord, open "Server Settings" for the server.

  2. Open Roles

    Choose "Roles".

  3. Drag Bagel's role higher

Drag Bagel's role above the roles it manages, then save.

  4. Try again in the dashboard

Repeat the action that failed. If Discord will not let you move the role, ask the server owner to do it.

07Disconnect or remove Bagel

at a glanceDisconnecting and removing the bot are two different things.
  1. Open the server's Settings page

On the Discord page, choose "Open" next to the server, then "Settings" in the "Server settings" menu.

  2. Go to the "Danger zone"

    Scroll to "Danger zone".

  3. Choose "Disconnect"

Confirm "Disconnect Discord?" with "Disconnect". Bagel stops posting and forgets which server this channel is linked to. Your channels and roles stay exactly as they are. Bagel itself stays in the server.

  4. To remove the bot, kick it in Discord

The dashboard says to right-click Bagel in the server's member list in Discord and choose "Kick". Kicking needs the Kick Members permission, or being the server owner. If you do not see "Kick", ask the server owner.

Re-authorize The "Danger zone" also has "Re-authorize". It runs the same Discord connection again, for example after you unchecked a permission.
